Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness after cataracts. Glaucoma is a silent condition that causes damage to the optic nerve at the back of your eye, which can cause loss of vision permanently. One of the major reasons for vision loss is related to intraocular pressure build up which can cause damage to the optic nerve – the nerve which sends images to the brain. Glaucoma can affect both of your eyes, but the extent of damage on each eye can be different. Detecting and treating Glaucoma early can slow your vision loss. It can be hereditary, and if you are over 40, and or male, than you are more likely to be affected by the disease. Regular eye examinations by your Optometrist or Australian Eye Care (if you have a current referral) are imperative as you will often not see any symptoms in the early stages of this disease.

If you are having trouble adjusting your eyes between light and dark, indoors to outdoors and vice versa, or if you have intermittent blurred vision , see halos around lights, bumping into things or suffering from increased sensitivity to light then you need to have your eyes tested as soon as possible to seek a formal diagnosis and ongoing treatment plan.
